NPG - Goldnigga
|
The Goldnigga album was only available via Prince's 1-800-NEW-FUNK merchandise line, NPG Store and NPG Catalog. There were two variations of the album, one without "Guess Who's Knockin'?" Apparently, this deletion was due to a similarity between it and a Paul McCartney song, performed with his band Wings.
It is generally agreed that Goldnigga was the weakest of the 3 NPG releases during this period. Part of the reason for this opinion is that the album did not feature lead vocals by Prince, as the other NPG albums did. Instead, Tony M., featured on Diamonds & Pearls, rapped his way through Goldnigga. Rarely Prince made a guest rap appearance, most notably in "Johnny." Although he is, as with most protege releases, prominent in the background vocals and instrumentation.
The release itself was Prince's first dip back into the Black Album-ish straight old school funk style he favored throughout some of his late 1990's output. The NPG releases in this period of his career were funk party albums that relied more on groove and off the cuff humor than melody. Critics, who probably wanted to hear an artsy Sign O' The Times part II rather than a fun party album from The Artist, panned these releases as inconsistent throwaways.
The Library Of Congress has yet to list records for the instrumental "Oilcan", "Goldie's Parade" and "Black FM In The House." The album sleeve lists all songs as written by the NPG, however, there are actually a couple of instances when the entire band was not involved in the writing of a song. Nevertheless, it is a more-than-reasonable assumption that Prince wrote the three compositions, likely with help from several NPG members. They are included here preliminarily as Prince penned songs.
