Before entering the recording industry, Martika was an actress. She notably starred in the TV program "Kids, Incorporated," the program that started the careers of other pop artists such as Rahsaan Patterson and two-thirds of the singing group Wild Orchid. In addition, actress Jennifer Love Hewitt and actor Mario Lopez also got their breaks on the show.
Prince gave a lot of his attention to the Martika's Kitchen project in 1990. Martika was returning from a highly successful first album that made her a teen icon and featured the number one pop single "Toy Soldiers." Among the tracks Prince contributed to the album was the number ten pop chart smash "Love...Thy Will Be Done." This beautiful ballad, however, was the only song to chart.
The title track was an upbeat number with a catchy chorus. "Spirit" and "Don't Say You Love Me" are also in the upbeat pop mode that "Martika's Kitchen" came from. Although, "Don't Say You Love Me" has a bit more R&B appeal than the other two. Martika's voice was in the same range as Prince's and she did a terrific job performing the songs. All the tracks are quality and there was even an outtake "Open Book," that was later performed magnificently by Jevetta Steele.
