Deborah Allen is a country performer who took a shot at the mainstream charts with Telepathy. The title track is a terrific mid tempo Prince song, augmented by a horn section. It sounds similar to the material of the late 1986 or early 1987, period. The song was released as a single, with several variations, but it only experienced minimal success with the popular market.
Telepathy was never released on CD, however, the title track was in late 1998. Renaissance Records created a Deborah Allen compilation, Anthology, which contained "Telepathy." Due to limited distribution, however, the Renaissance compilation is difficult to find at retail, particularly outside of the United States. Anthology can be found for sale online at the record label's website http://skymarshall.com/renaissance/index.html.
The Anthology liner notes speak briefly about how Deborah Allen attained a track written by Prince: "...'A song written by Joey Co Co [sic], 'The Artist Formerly Known As Prince'. RCA was going through another executive turn-over and, with most of my album recorded, I knew I needed something special to keep from becoming a casualty. I said a prayer, asking for guidance, then suddenly I knew I needed to write to Prince and ask for his assistance. I wrote, sent it to the studio in care of his engineer, Coke Johnson, and within days I received "Telepathy" ...I was thrilled! He said it was the best thing he had done since "Kiss". I will be forever grateful and honored that he shared his genius with me...he has a generous heart, and a kind soul...and he treated me very respectfully.'"
