The Truth... was the first project embarked on after Emancipation was completed. The sessions were short, but did produce some of the most introspective music of The Artist's career.
Although The Truth... was originally intended to be sold alone, it was added to the 3 compact disc set (4 including Kamasutra directly from 1-800-NEW-FUNK) of previously bootlegged material, Crystal Ball. Prior to The Truth..., there was talk of a national release of the acoustic album on EMI Records. However, the label shut down their New York promotional offices and transferred their acts to other affiliated labels in early Summer 1997. threw around various release plans before "giving it away" with Crystal Ball. A cassette promo was produced in highly limited quantity.
The music was all acoustic with some various keyboard and sound augmentations throughout. Lyrically, was more open than usual about various personal topics. He speaks about Mayte's father in "Man In A Uniform," his vegetarian beliefs in "Animal Kingdom" and his press image in "Don't Play Me." Perhaps that is part of the reason the songs were so well received is that they are lyrically honest and heartfelt. Critics, for the most part, praised the album for it's simple approach and strong material.
