The Black Album
Originally planned as a 1987 release, The Black Album did not see the light of day until late-1994. Not officially, at least. Prince pulled the originally planned release because he felt the album's content was too dark. To paraphrase, if he died he did not want it remembered as the last thing he did. Instead, Prince set off to work on Lovesexy, which was released just a few months later. The effort went on to be one of the greatest selling bootlegs of all time. The leaks were so bad that Prince placed a hidden "don't buy the black album, I'm sorry" message in his video for "Alphabet St."

The Black Album was planned to be released with minimal promotion and a plain black colored cover. The contents were some of the funkiest music Prince had done since Controversy and Dirty Mind. Perhaps the album would have faired better in 1987 than it did when it was released as part of O{+^'s compromise to get out of his Warner Brothers contract.
