Diamonds And Pearls
|
Prince entered into a rather transitional period with Diamonds And Pearls. Like most veteran artists, he had difficulty incorporating the new hip-hop influenced style that was beginning to dominate the charts. The new sound was an advancement in music, but imaginative songwriting suffered significantly. Prince, perhaps the most imaginative songwriter of the previous decade, even had a hard time incorporating hip-hop into his sound.
Even though Prince was struggling to fit in somewhat on Diamonds And Pearls, he did manage to do something quite different: use a band. While most artists were using drum machines and stale electronic instruments, Prince favored a live sound. This may be what set him apart from the rest of the market and gave him several hit singles. Fortunately, on Diamonds And Pearls he still had his signatures, with a new found jazzy sound.
Still, the album had it's awkward moments when he seemed to be following trends instead of creating them. For one, Prince took on a rapper, Tony M., to help on many songs. Several critics blasted this move as an effort to fit in with the more masculine acts that were growing in popularity at this time. In hindsight, the critics were probably right on this.
