Title: "SJSU Prince Concert Canceled; Explanation Is Due In S.F. Today"
Written By: David L. Beck
The concert by the artist formerly known as Prince has gone the way of
the artist's name: It's been erased.
The concert was scheduled for Saturday night in San Jose State
University's Event Center. Its cancellation was announced in a fax
shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday -- in time for the Event Center box
office to change its concert message line, but not in time to prevent
some copies of today's Mercury News eye section from being printed
with a photo of the artist and no word of the cancellation.
Bill Graham Presents, which was to have produced the concert,
scheduled a news conference for this morning to explain the
cancellation.
Billy Sparks, Prince's manager; Londell McMillian, his attorney; BGP
Vice President Lee Smith; and BASS ticket agency Executive Vice
President David Mendelsohn are expected to help explain.
"I really can't tell you any more," said Jean Catino, BGP's
advertising director.
Asked why the cancellation of a San Jose concert was being
"explained" in San Francisco, she added, "That's why I want to get
the word out as early as we can that the show isn't happening. We'll
have a full explanation tomorrow at 10. . . . I really can't say more.
I'm sorry."
The concert was to have been a benefit for Prince's charity, Love 4
One Another. It was sold out.
Refunds are available at the place of purchase.
