This 10-song set, recorded when he was still Prince and not "the artist formerly known as Prince," is fun, forgettable and totally absent of the cutting-edge novelty usually associated with a new Prince disc.
With its mostly sex-tinged lyrics, Come is reminiscent of Dirty Mind, although we get techno in Loose, teasing playfulness in Letitgo and sauciness in the 10-minute title track.
A stormy look at child abuse in Papa doesn't fit well, and the haphazardness of it all comes to haunt with the incessant beat and warped rhythm of Pheromone. Solo's disjointed harp and a cappella start is little more than a take on his more ethereal God. Only Space, in which Prince uses his breezy pop formula as ambiance, seems too short at 4 1/2 minutes.
For once, this is a Prince platter that's easy to pass on. At times, these leftovers seem warm. But after eating it, we find it's not a full dinner.
